Join textiles artist Clare Sams for this free creative workshop for 10-16 year olds and learn how to make your own winter warmers using upcycled materials! This workshop is part of The Blank Page Project.
Workshops take place from 9.45AM to 3.30PM and include a free lunch, drinks and snacks!
This workshop will build confidence in a range of beginner techniques using yarn and fabrics, no previous knitting experience required. You will learn how to 'finger knit' to make a chunky yarn scarf, then progress onto using a knitting frame and stitching up upcycled fabrics to make simple woolly accessories. There will be the opportunity to try out other ways to customise your winter warmers, such as pom-poms, tassels, and stitching.
By the end of the day you will have created some winter accessories such as scarves, beanie hats, leg warmers or fingerless mitts. You are welcome to bring old clothing or blankets to upcycle, ideal items include hoodies and fleeces.
The wellbeing of our young people is really important to us and time outdoors is a key part of that. With this in mind, where possible a short walk or time outdoors will be incorporated into the workshop days. This will be supervised by the staff running the workshops and will also be weather dependent. Please ensure your child has a coat and sensible footwear!
Workshops are completely free to attend but must be booked in advance. You can book online via eequ.

Please get in touch with the library location for the workshop to discuss options. Please note that whilst we welcome all young people, our staff are not specifically SEND trained.

Clare is a textiles arts practitioner, lecturer and arts educator, and is Suffolk Libraries’ former Environmentalist in Residence. She has a master’s degree in Academic Practice for Art Design and Communication and holds a Guinness World Record for the largest crochet hook.
As a freelance educator, Clare facilitates creative arts activities for all ages and abilities, using accessible techniques and sustainable materials in a range of cultural, community and educational settings.
