A number of staff took on the Orwell Challenge on Sunday 25 June to help fundraise for the important work that Suffolk Libraries does across the county.
Our libraries sit at the heart of communities across Suffolk, and fundraising events help us to maintain the vital services that support some of the most vulnerable people in the county.
The Rotary Club of Ipswich East has been holding its annual charity walk along the banks of the glorious River Orwell for over 40 years. It was a great opportunity for people to get outside in the fresh air, feel part of a team, and to help raise money and spread the word about the great work we do in our communities.
Our walking wonders included Lesley Dolphin (former BBC Radio Suffolk presenter and recent Suffolk Libraries patron), Mandy Wilkinson (Director of Finance at Suffolk Libraries), Laura Parker (Director of People & Culture at Suffolk Libraries), and Belle Bradley (Young Trustee at Suffolk Libraries).
Despite the blistering heat with it being the hottest day of the year so far, our Orwell Challengers completed the circuit with high spirits. The total amount raised currently stands at £2,218, and our JustGiving page is still active for anyone who would like to donate.
Lesley Dolphin, former BBC Radio Suffolk presenter and recent Suffolk Libraries patron, said:
“I’m really chuffed to have completed the Orwell Challenge considering the hot weather! The event was so well organised by Ipswich East Rotary club that they almost made it easy. There are over 40 libraries across Suffolk that provide books, the use of computers, group events and a friendly face. I am so pleased to help ensure they continue to provide their essential services that are available to everyone.”
Mandy Wilkinson, Director of Finance at Suffolk Libraries, said:
“The heat was the worst part of the day. However, we did raise a few smiles as we were using our brollies as sun shades, which worked very well. The route took us through wonderful landscapes which we would not have seen under our own steam which was an added bonus.
“We were passed on the way home by Lesley Dolphin and Belinda Bradley as they had set off before us, but they were doing the 26-mile course. Richard and I came in last at 6PM just before the sweepers – the Orwell is a personal challenge not a race – unless of course you are doing the Marathon!”
Belle Bradley, Young Trustee at Suffolk Libraries, said:
“In 29°C heat, this year's challenge was tough, but I was delighted to complete the full 25 miles with my partner Jacob. It took us a crazy 10 hours and we were nearly caught up by the sweepers at the end. The knowledge that our fundraising was so vital to Suffolk Libraries kept us going. It's always been more than just borrowing books; as a Young Trustee, I've seen firsthand just how important the wellbeing, environmental and community services are for Suffolk and wanted to help even more.
“We've raised about £250 but that number keeps going up. I know from research that every £1 spent [on Suffolk Libraries] generates more than £8 of social value, so every penny really did count. It feels great to know we're supporting people who need it most.”
Laura Parker, Director of People & Culture at Suffolk Libraries, said:
“I decided to take part in the challenge for a number of reasons: to get out and enjoy the beautiful country side of Suffolk (especially as there is a river involved), and for the achievement and my own wellbeing. Finally, I see the wonderful things that a lot of people do within Suffolk Libraries to raise money and our profile and I wanted to be able to contribute to this also.”
Thank you to everyone who got involved in the Orwell Challenge – from our walkers to our well-wishers and everyone who donated, you’re helping us make a difference.
