Get Online Week

Suffolk Libraries is marking Get Online Week - the annual campaign run by Good Things Foundation to help people to get online, learn about online safety, and stay connected wherever they are.

Get Online Week runs from 14 to 20 October and Suffolk Libraries is proud to support the initiative by reminding people of the many ways the organisation is helping to tackle digital isolation and help them get online.

These include the recently launched National Databank scheme for Suffolk which offers free SIM cards, support sessions in libraries and free computer and internet access in every library.

Thom Hollyer, Suffolk Libraries Digital Inclusion Lead, said:

“Suffolk Libraries are once again proud to be supporting Get Online Week from Good Things Foundation. Our libraries have an essential role to play in tackling digital exclusion and making sure everyone has access to the tools, skills and support they need to stay connected in our increasingly online world. From drop-in advice sessions, online resources like Learn My Way, free Wifi and computers in our libraries and now supporting people who are struggling to afford phone data through Good Things Foundations' own Databank scheme, we want Suffolk Libraries to be a one-stop shop for your digital needs.”

Free SIM cards

Suffolk Libraries was awarded funding from Suffolk’s Digital Inclusion Fund to administer the National Databank scheme (also run by Good Things Foundation). Anyone struggling to afford a mobile phone contract can now get a free SIM card preloaded with mobile data from our libraries to help them get online and stay connected with loved ones.

If you don’t have a working mobile phone number or mobile data it can make life very difficult to apply for jobs or benefits and people in this position are least able to afford a regular mobile phone contract.

The databank is available at all our 45 libraries across Suffolk, and our staff are trained to make referrals. You can visit your local library during opening hours to be referred for the scheme.

Digital skill sessions in libraries

Many of our libraries host regular drop-ins with IT and tech experts to help you get the best out of your phone, laptop or tablet. We partner with local organisations who run these events, including East Suffolk Council, Communities Together East Anglia, and LXpert.

These sessions are designed for anyone needing extra help with tech, whether you’ve recently got a new device or if you’re having a problem with your current one. From creating online accounts and email addresses, to online shopping and medical services, and even learning how to spot an online scam, see where your nearest digital support session is taking place.

Free WiFi and Computers

All our libraries offer free, unlimited WiFi which you can use to get online with your personal devices in a library space. We also offer free computer access so you can do family history research, apply for jobs, or do homework and coursework. Our computers are completely free to use but you will need a library card to log on.
