At Suffolk Libraries, we believe in the power of stories to inspire, educate, and connect communities. Our mission is to celebrate diverse narratives and foster a love for storytelling through engaging programmes and events.
We are looking for someone with strong connections to Lowestoft to join our team as Storyteller in Residence (SIR) between March – June to help realise our ambitions to capture stories for the town. We want to explore storytelling in all its forms from theatre to spoken word, poetry, photography, music, sound design, comedy and more
Key Responsibilities
Celebrate and Reflect: Collaborate with Suffolk Libraries staff to create a commemorative event for the library’s anniversary
Recruit Participants: Facilitate engagement workshops in the library and use outreach strategies to invite community members to lend their story to the project, including social media campaigns, flyers, and announcements at local events
Collect Stories: Gather diverse stories from a range of individuals. Conducting interviews, ensuring a safe, respectful and engaging environment for participants
Creation of a Stories Collection: Recording and editing material with contributors and prepare stories for presentation / digitisation
Digitise Stories: Collaborate with Suffolk Libraries staff to design an easy-to-navigate digital collection that allows users to explore the stories
Share Stories: Present our community stories programme live in the Suffolk Libraries tepee at First Light Festival in June 2025.
What we're looking for
Proven experience as a community facilitator or in a related field
Proven experience in a creative artform such as writing, drawing, photography, music, sound design, etc
Some familiarity with digital storytelling platforms and social media
Strong communication and presentation skills
Ability to connect with a variety of audiences and foster an inclusive environment
Passion for storytelling and a deep understanding of its cultural significance
Experience in event planning and community engagement is a plus
Be able to work independently and as part of a team
Share your skills and knowledge with library staff
Ability to participate in promotion, including media opportunities to promote the residency, the project, and Suffolk Libraries
