Suffolk Libraries is thrilled to announce a silent auction for a new piece of artwork that has been kindly donated by the elusive artist known as ‘The Hat’. Titled Day's Eye, the painting was anonymously left on the steps of Framlingham Library, wrapped in The Hat's signature brown paper with false postage details. It has been contributed to support the Suffolk Libraries' Make a Difference With a Daisy campaign.
Bidding for the artwork is now open online at https://www.peoplesfundraising.com/hat and will close on 30 September.
The true identity of this reclusive painter- often dubbed Suffolk’s version of Banksy – remains unknown. The Hat has previously donated several pieces of art to Suffolk Libraries’ fundraising campaigns, including Lilypond which was donated to Framlingham Library for its gallery exhibition in May 2022, and Cyril, the hat-wearing dog sculpture, a standout piece in last year’s PAWS-itivity campaign, which raised £550 at auction in October 2023.
Alex Downing, Suffolk Libraries’ Fundraising and Partnerships Manager, commented:
"Previous works sold to private buyers have fetched as much as £4,500 so we really hope that this amazing donation will capture the public’s interest. The artwork has been authenticated by The Hat via their website and comes with its original packaging and three laminated sheets providing background on the piece’s creation.”
All proceeds from the auction of Day's Eye will support Suffolk Libraries' vital work in fostering children's literacy, combating social and digital isolation, and enhancing community wellbeing across the county.
